Why Is My Washer Not Spinning?

Updated June 2026 · Based on 17+ years of Treasure Coast service calls

TL;DR

Try this first: redistribute the load. An unbalanced load is the #1 reason washers stop spinning. If that doesn't fix it, the problem is mechanical — a failed lid switch (top-loaders), worn belt, broken motor coupling, or bad motor. Most washer spin repairs cost $100—$300. The motor is the most expensive at $200—$400.

5 Causes (Ranked by Frequency)

✅ DIY FIX

1. Unbalanced Load

Heavy items (towels, jeans, comforters) bunch up on one side of the drum. The washer detects the imbalance, stops spinning, and may display an error code (UE, UB, or E4 on most brands). Fix: Open the washer, redistribute items evenly around the drum, and restart. For bulky items like comforters or sleeping bags, add a few towels to balance the weight. If the washer sits on an uneven floor, level it by adjusting the feet — an unlevel washer is more sensitive to load imbalance.

2. Lid Switch Failure (Top-Loaders)

Top-loading washers have a lid switch that prevents spinning when the lid is open — it's a safety feature to keep hands out of a spinning drum. When the switch fails, the washer thinks the lid is permanently open and won't spin. Quick test: press the switch manually with the lid open. You should hear a click. If there's no click, or if the switch clicks but the washer still won't spin, the switch needs replacement. Cost: $100—$200. This is the #1 mechanical cause of "won't spin" on top-loaders.

3. Worn or Broken Drive Belt

The drive belt wraps around the drum and connects it to the motor. After years of use, belts stretch, crack, fray, or break entirely. When the belt fails, the motor runs (you'll hear it) but the drum doesn't turn. If you can spin the drum easily by hand with very little resistance, the belt is likely broken. Cost: $100—$200.

4. Failed Motor Coupling

The motor coupling is a small plastic/rubber piece that connects the motor to the transmission. It's designed to break if the drum is jammed — acting like a fuse to protect the motor and transmission from damage. Over time, normal wear also breaks it down. When it fails, the motor spins freely but the drum doesn't move. Common on Whirlpool direct-drive washers. Cost: $100—$200.

5. Faulty Drive Motor

If the motor hums loudly but doesn't turn, or doesn't respond at all, the motor itself has failed. Before condemning the motor, a technician will check the motor capacitor (which gives the motor its starting boost) — a bad capacitor mimics a motor failure but costs much less to fix. Full motor replacement: $200—$400. On washers over 10 years old, a motor replacement may not be worth it. Use the 50% rule.

💡 TOP-LOADER VS. FRONT-LOADER

Top-loaders: Most spin failures are lid switch or motor coupling issues. These are straightforward $100—$200 repairs. Front-loaders: Spin problems are often caused by a failed door latch/lock (same concept as the lid switch), worn bearings (loud grinding noise), or a bad control board. Front-loader bearing replacement is expensive ($250—$500) because the entire drum must be partially disassembled. If your front-loader is grinding during spin, get a diagnostic before it damages the drum.

When to Worry About Water

A washer that stopped mid-cycle has a drum full of water and wet clothes. Most washers will drain if you run just a "Drain & Spin" cycle. If that doesn't work:

  • Top-loader: You can usually bail out water with a bucket. Not fun, but effective.
  • Front-loader: Use the emergency drain hose (small hose behind a panel at the bottom front). Place a shallow pan under it, open the cap, and let gravity drain. This can take 15—20 minutes.

If the washer also leaks water on the floor when it tries to spin, the problem may involve the pump or a damaged seal.
