Garbage Disposal Humming But Not Working?
Updated June 2026 · Usually fixable in 5 minutes
Humming = jammed flywheel. The motor works but something is stuck. Turn off power, use the 1/4-inch hex key under the unit to manually rotate the flywheel, remove the stuck object with tongs, press the red reset button, and test. This fixes it 90% of the time. If the disposal doesn't hum at all (dead silent), press reset first. Still nothing? The motor burned out — replacement is $150—$300 installed.
Never put your hand inside a garbage disposal. Even when off, the impeller blades are sharp. Use tongs, pliers, or a long wooden spoon handle to dislodge objects. Always turn off the disposal and unplug it (or flip the breaker) before working on it.
The 5-Minute DIY Fix
- Turn off the disposal. Flip the wall switch to OFF. Better yet, unplug it under the sink or flip the breaker.
- Find the hex socket. Look at the very bottom center of the disposal unit under the sink. There's a small hex hole. Insert a 1/4-inch Allen wrench (most disposals come with one — check the kitchen junk drawer).
- Manually rotate the flywheel. Turn the Allen wrench back and forth. You'll feel resistance where the jam is. Work it until the flywheel moves freely in both directions.
- Remove the obstruction. Use a flashlight to look down into the disposal from above. Use tongs or pliers to pull out the stuck object. Common culprits: small bones, fruit pits (peach, avocado), broken glass, bottle caps, twist ties, and small utensils.
- Press the red reset button. On the bottom of the unit. This resets the internal circuit breaker that tripped when the motor stalled.
- Test. Turn on cold water, then flip the switch. The disposal should spin freely.
What If It's Not Humming? (Dead Silent)
A disposal that makes no sound at all has a different problem:
- Check the reset button first. This is the #1 fix for a silent disposal. Press the red button on the bottom of the unit firmly. If it clicks, the internal breaker had tripped. Test the disposal.
- Check the wall switch and breaker. Make sure the switch works and the breaker hasn't tripped.
- Check the outlet. Disposals plug into an outlet under the sink. Unplug the disposal and plug in something else (a lamp, phone charger) to verify the outlet has power.
- Motor burned out. If the reset, switch, breaker, and outlet all check out and the disposal is completely silent, the motor has failed. Replacement is usually more cost-effective than motor repair — a new disposal installed costs $150—$300 depending on horsepower.
Things You Should Never Put in a Disposal
- Grease, oil, or fat — solidifies and clogs the drain line
- Fibrous vegetables (celery, asparagus, corn husks) — fibers wrap around the impeller
- Pasta, rice, or bread — expands with water and clogs
- Eggshells — the membrane sticks to the impeller (despite the myth that they "sharpen" the blades)
- Coffee grounds — they look fine going in but accumulate in the drain pipe
- Bones larger than chicken wing bones — small bones are fine, large bones jam the flywheel
Disposals develop odor from food buildup on the impeller and inside the grind chamber. Fix: Drop a few ice cubes and a handful of coarse salt into the disposal and run it for 15 seconds. The ice and salt scrub the impeller and chamber walls. Follow with half a lemon for a fresh scent. Do this weekly. In Florida's heat and humidity, disposal odor builds faster — this maintenance makes a noticeable difference.
Repair vs. Replace a Garbage Disposal
Disposals are inexpensive appliances ($75—$250 for the unit). If the motor has burned out, replacement is almost always the better choice over repair. A technician can install a new disposal in under an hour. The labor is the same whether we're repairing the old one or installing a new one — so you might as well get a fresh unit with a full warranty. If the disposal is under 5 years old and the issue is just a jam, fix it. If it's 8+ years old with a burned motor, replace it.
